Two specs decide whether a barrier gate feels fast and fits the lane: boom arm length and opening speed. Both are linked — a longer arm needs more torque and is typically slower.
Most barrier booms are straight aluminium arms from 3 to 6 m. Very wide lanes use a fencing or articulated (folding) boom to clear the opening without an oversized single arm. Match arm length to the lane width plus a small overlap so vehicles cannot slip around.
Opening speed is quoted in seconds for 90 degrees of travel. Typical ranges:
A longer arm increases inertia, so very long booms are paired with stronger motors and may open a little slower. Skirt or fencing booms add wind load and should be specified with a suited motor.
